Media Language in 'Ghost Ship'

MISE EN SCENE

  • typecasting the actors in the film

  • the ship reminds the audience of the titanic

  • the statue in the back of a scene is depicted with no arms to foreshadow the later event

  • throughout the opening scene, the shots are cut in half by objects in the scene to foreshadow what later happens in the film

  • the lighting changes from a warm colour to a blue as the wire starts to move to show the climax approaching

SOUND

  • as the film opens, happy and lively non-digetic music plays which sharply contrasts the ending of the opening scene

  • the singing of the lady in the red dress echoes onto the deck

  • the digetic sound is turned up as the wire starts to move to make the scene more dramatic

  • the sound of all the people being hit by the wire overlap as they each get sliced

  • the little girl screams very loudly at the end of the scene as the camera fades to show the scene closing

CAMERAWORK

  • the crane shot at the beginning of the film is later repeated after the opening scene after everyone dies

  • slow and long dolly shots of everyone on the boat before disaster strikes

  • a bird's eye view/pan shot of the deck of the boat before and after everyone dies to show the contrast

  • angles constantly changing as the wire unravels to create a sense of chaos

  • pull focus of the wire right before it moves

EDITING

  • fade in and out of the scene to and from the sea

  • shot reverse shot of the lady in the red dress and the man in green uniform to show that they both orchestrated the whole thing

  • combination of slow motion and fast motion in the wire scene to create chaos and give the audience time to realise what has actually happened in the scene

  • mirrored dissolve transitions at the beginning and the end of the whole scene

  • choppy and static shots used throughout to also add the the chaos of the situation
