The Big issue is a magazine created by Gordon Roddick and John Bird in 1991 which aims to help the homeless communities of the UK.
Homeless vendors buy the magazine for £1.75 each and sell them at £4 to make a profit, which they get to keep.
Since 1991, it has gained a profit of £250 million pounds which went entirely to the vendors who sold it.
It was originally a monthly issue, but upon its success it became weekly.
It is a global company with vendors all around the world.
The Big Issue online shop was launched in 2016, promoting ethical small businesses.
It is the only magazine on the market to have an increase in sales after many news companies went online.
Demographic:
- left leaning, anti-tory
- ABC1 demographic (wealthier, older and educated people)
- people who wish to help the homeless
