The Jungle Book Case Study

The Walt Disney Company was founded in 1923 by Walt and Roy Disney, 2 brothers.

The company is a multi-national conglomerate which is now horizontally and vertically integrated.

How Walt Disney makes their money:

- franchises and sequels

- live action remakes

- multiple theme parks worldwide

- creating films for children (adults need to go with children to the cinema, doubling the potential profit)

- buying and owning other companies

- the Disney vault (withholding films from DVD after release just to show them in the cinema a few years later to make audiences want to watch it more)

horizontal integration - when a production company expands into other areas of one industry by acquiring or merging with other companies that do the same thing to help eliminate competition.

vertical integration - when the production company has ownership of the means of production, distribution, marketing and exhibition.

The Jungle Book (1967)

- produced by Walt Disney Productions

- the last film to be produced by Walt Disney, as he died during production

- iconic soundtrack which is still recognised and appreciated almost 60 years later.

- total gross of $205.8 million worldwide with an original budget of $4 million to make

- ninth highest grossing film of 1967

- rated U

The Jungle Book (2016)

- produced by Walt Disney Pictures

- directed by Jon Favreau, who had previously directed marvel films such as Iron Man and The Avengers

- in 2016, Disney was the number 1 film distributor

- total gross of $966 million worldwide with an original budget of $175 million to make

- fifth highest grossing film of 2016
