TV Show Poster Semiotics in 'Glee'

Updated: Jan 12, 2023

The poster being set in a school theatre could show that the show is musical theatre themed or musically inclined and also set in a school.

The two teachers oppositionally facing each other could connote them as an angel and devil, and that the male teacher is nice as he is wearing pale colours and the female teacher is mean as she is wearing red. The female teacher wearing red could show that she is an angry person, or possibly a mean teacher. The female teacher unplugging the lights in the background further proves that she is mean and/or angry. The female teacher’s facial expression also enforces the fact that she could be mean or angry, as she is pulling a stern face.

The cheerleader in the background sitting high up on a light shows that she is of high status in the school. The cheerleader wearing red could also imply that she is mean in the show. The cheerleaders pose also adds to her high status.

The two characters at the forefront of the poster are looking longingly at each other, which could show there is a romance happening between them. These two characters being at the front could both be main characters, as they are the main focus of the poster. Both the main characters wearing blue contrasts the cheerleader and the female teacher who are both wearing red.

The character wearing glasses could be a nerd in the show, as glasses usually connote to clever people.

The character wearing a black glove like Michael Jackson further adds to the musical theatre theme in the show.

The character sitting inside the 'G' prop in the background wearing green could be a neutral or possibly nice character in the show, as green is a pale and muted colour. The pose and expression of the girl in the green jumper could show that she is in love with the male teacher, as she is looking at him longingly. The fact that he is not looking back could show a one-sided romance from her point of view.

The characters in the back of the poster could have less significance in the show compared to the characters in the front.

The explosion in the back of the poster could show that not everything goes right in the show, and that there could be some chaos in the school.
