Film Poster Semiotics in 'Lady Bird'

Updated: Jan 12, 2023

The ‘Lady Bird’ film poster contains many elements that allude to a religious theme in the film – the cross on the wall in the back of the photo suggests a Christian/Catholic essence, and the stained-glass border around the poster could remind the consumers of a church. Also, in the background of the image, teenagers in school uniform can be seen sitting in a hall of some kind, which shows that the film is set inside a school that could possibly be religious.

In the foreground of the image is a photo of the main character, ‘Lady Bird’, who has red hair. The red hair could be a literal metaphor for the fact that she has the nickname of ‘Lady Bird’ It could also represent anger and possibly fire, and how throughout the film she experiences a lot of heated moments with her mother where she portrays a lot of anger. The red could also represent love and how she falls in love in the film. The red representing both love and anger could show the kind of relationship she has with her mother, as they fight a lot, but they love and care for each other deep down. Red is also a bright colour, which could show that Lady Bird wants to stand out and be unique, which she does. Red could also be a symbol of rebellion, as its commonly used in politics, and Lady Bird is a rebellious girl who wants to do the opposite of what is advised to her by her family and her school.

In the poster, she is shown with a blank expression on her face. This and the fact that her red hair has connotations to fire could show her determination to succeed in life, and to do what she wants to do without letting anything stop her.
